Walmart de México y Centroamérica announces the opening of its latest Walmart Supercenter in Puerto Peñasco, Sonora. The 5,700-square-meter facility, located at Boulevard Josefa Ortiz de Dominguez #112 in Las Conchas, introduces advanced retail technology and sustainable operations to the region.

Key Operational Features

The new location implements several technological advancements, including self-checkout stations, online order pickup, and home delivery services. The store integrates Walmart's comprehensive digital ecosystem, featuring:

  • Bait: A proprietary mobile virtual network operator (MVNO) service providing affordable prepaid mobile phone and internet packages, operating on Mexico's major telecommunications infrastructure with competitive rates for budget-conscious consumers.

  • Cashi: An advanced digital wallet mobile app enabling cashless purchases, bill payments, money transfers, and exclusive promotions. Customers can load funds through various methods, including in-store cash deposits.

  • Health Program: Comprehensive healthcare support offering pharmacy discounts and telemedicine services, allowing customers to consult healthcare professionals remotely via phone.

  • Remittance Services: Integrated financial services enabling customers to receive international money transfers directly at the store, with options for cash withdrawal or Cashi wallet deposits.

  • Walmart Benefits: A personalized rewards program offering exclusive promotions based on registered customer purchase history.

Environmental and Technical Infrastructure

Central to the facility's design are two major sustainability initiatives:

- An on-site wastewater treatment facility for water recycling and reuse

- Solar panel installations in the parking area, providing both renewable energy generation and vehicle shade

Economic Impact

The establishment has generated 129 permanent positions, contributing to Walmart's total workforce of over 5,100 employees in Sonora state. The hiring strategy demonstrates commitment to workplace diversity, with 56% of positions filled by women and 4% by individuals with disabilities.

Strategic Significance

This expansion marks a significant development in Walmart's Sonora operations, which began in 1994 in Hermosillo. The new location serves as a model for the company's commitment to technological integration and environmental sustainability in retail operations.

Leadership Recognition

The facility's inauguration was attended by key figures including:

- Oscar Eduardo Castro, Mayor of Puerto Peñasco

- Rommel Bustamante Pino, Economic Development and Tourism Director

- Edmundo Delgado, Vice President of Walmart Supercenter and Walmart Express

- José Ángel Lozano, Director of Operations for Walmart Supercenter

This strategic expansion enhances Puerto Peñasco's retail infrastructure while advancing Walmart's position in Mexico's evolving retail sector. The facility exemplifies the company's approach to combining operational excellence with environmental responsibility and community engagement.
